Those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
are coming to an end. Pretty soon, sunshine and warm weather will
give way to cooler days, cold nights and falling leaves. While we
aren’t keen on saying goodbye to long summer days and vacation
time, we’re also the first to look forward to changing colors, the
crispness of the air and the smell of autumn bonfires.
Another thing that fall means is
preparing for the season. Here are some tips to remind you about what
to do as the days grow shorter.
Get your cool weather bedding out.
Time to pull the wool, flannel and
heavier blankets out. It’s been several months since you needed
fabrics other than cotton or linen on your bed. Before things get too
chilly, take the time to take your bedding to the cleaner so they’re
ready to go when the mercury dips.
Re-do your entranceway.
You’re going to want to make room for
hats, down vests, fleece, boots, and other items so they’re right
where you need them. It’s going to rain and before you know it,
it’s going to snow as well. Make sure you have a rubber mat or boot
tray near the door so you don’t slosh all over your carpet or
hardwood floor.
Check light bulbs and batteries.
There’s no time like the change of
seasons to do a sweep of your place to see what needs to be replaced.
New batteries for the smoke detector and flashlights? Check.
Energy-saving bulbs in the lamps? Check.
Keep it clean.
Got dust? Wipe it up. In fact, give your place a thorough cleaning.
Vacuum the dust. Use soap and water and get into corners and
crevices. If you have a freestanding allergy filter, make sure it’s
clean, too. Those blades can accumulate a lot of dust.
Store your summer stuff.
Fall is a great time to go biking, but
at some point, unless you’re a bicycle commuter, plan to prepare
your ride for the long winter months. Clean the gears, lubricate the
chain and check the tires to ensure that they’re in good shape for
another year. Same with summer furnishings, like those gauzy curtains
that gently flutter in the warm breeze. Get them cleaned and stash
them until spring.
Prepare
your plants.
Get
your flowers and foliage ready for fall by preparing them for the
expected change in temperature. If you have plants on your balcony
that don’t like cooler weather, bring them inside or cover them. If
you have flowers inside that need above-average sunlight, move them
near windows where they can stay healthy over the next several
months.
Go
earth-toney.
You change your wardrobe to reflect
the seasons, so why wouldn’t you do the same with your decor? Let
summer’s pastels and bright colors give way to earth tones in your
home. Orange, brown, sage, and other colors will spruce up your
apartment for the months ahead. In addition, use harvest items like
gourds and pumpkins accompanied by fall-scented potpourri and candles
to really usher in the change.
With a few changes, some important
and some cosmetic, you can really transform your living space into an
environment that’s wonderful for both relaxing and entertaining.
